Adaptive Protection is a capability of Microsoft Purview that leverages machine learning to understand how users interact with data, assign risk levels, and automatically tailor Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention controls.

Current status: We’ve identified that an update to Role Based Access Control (RBAC) introduced a regression that impacted the Adaptive Protection activation flow for Microsoft Purview, which leverages Insider Risk Management and Data Loss Prevention. This introduced delays when an admin activated Adaptive Protection using the “Turn on Adaptive Protection” button on the Microsoft Purview home page or the “Quick setup” button on the Adaptive Protection page in Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management. We’ve deployed a code fix to address the RBAC regression on Friday, April 7, 2023, and we confirmed this fix has allowed activations to proceed as expected if performed after this date. Adaptive Protection will now be activated in the next couple of days for the admins that had clicked one of these buttons during the affected period.

Scope of impact: Impact may occur for all admins that attempted to activate Adaptive Protection in Microsoft Purview between Saturday, February 25, 2023, and Friday, April 7, 2023.
