Users running affected queries performed within customized or legacy versions of the search user interface (UI) within Microsoft 365 service platforms may receive an error when encountering this problem, although no error will be shown for occurrences of the issue within the modern search UI.

Current status: This problem is occurring due to a small set of incorrect entries written to the search index during impact from the event described in MO545600 that caused search failures for users across our worldwide environment.

We’ve initiated our planned incremental deployment across our global infrastructure to repair the search index. The first phase of this is nearly finished, and our initial monitoring telemetry indicates that it is effective in preventing further impact; however, we expect that this process will require an extended period to complete.

Scope of impact: While a rare occurrence, any user may experience this issue when performing a search query that encounters an incorrect index entry.

Root Cause: Impact described in MO545600 was caused by a service change that introduced an encoding mismatch between the crawler and query return service that serves Microsoft 365 service platforms. As a result of this mismatch, the service began writing incorrect entries into the search index that, when encountered, caused partial failures for user search queries and manifested as incomplete search results.
