In MC617077, we announced that we will be introducing new capabilities for deploying drivers and firmware in Windows Autopatch-enabled tenants using Microsoft Intune’s recently released driver management capabilities.

[When will this happen:]

The general availability rollout will be done in phases starting the week of July 24, 2023, and should conclude on or around late August 2023 (previously early August).

[How will this affect your organization:]

With this feature, Windows Autopatch will:

• Configure the deployment of required drivers and firmware available through Windows Update to your Windows Autopatch devices. Four new device driver update policies with automatic approval will be created in your environment; one for each existing ring today:
  • Windows Autopatch C Driver Update policy [Test]
  • Windows Autopatch C Driver Update policy [First]
  • Windows Autopatch C Driver Update policy [Fast]
  • Windows Autopatch C Driver Update policy [Broad]
• Provide administrators an opt-out option for Windows Autopatch-delivered driver management.

We support the ability for IT admins to directly modify the newly created driver management policies using the Microsoft Intune driver updates blade.

We recommend that IT admins use this new feature to create policies for Windows Autopatch managed devices. If you also create policies in Intune directly, if one or more policies target the same device, any policy with install/automatic approval for a driver will take precedence over any policy with decline/manual approval for a driver.

There is no integration with Windows Autopatch groups at this time. Rather, the driver management features will leverage the Windows Autopatch service-based deployment rings. Deeper integration with Autopatch groups will be available for preview later this year, offering driver-level pause and resume, ring-based pause and resume for all applicable drivers, while making other drivers available for approval to your Autopatch Groups as well.
