User impact: Users within Microsoft 365 groups without an owner may be unable to take ownership.

More info: Users within a group without an owner are sent an email message asking if they’d like to take ownership.

A 500 HTTP error response is presented if a user selects “yes” or “no” within the message.

As a workaround users can reach out to admins to manually set the owner of the groups.

Current status: We’ve successfully validated the fix and will begin deployment, which we expect to complete by Tuesday, December 17, 2024. As the fix propagates through the affected environment, users will start to notice relief from the impact. In parallel, we’re continuing to explore options to expedite the deployment and bring the completion date forward.”

Scope of impact: Impact is specific to some users who are served through the affected infrastructure who are in Microsoft 365 groups without an owner.

Root cause: A regression within a recent update, intended to improve the user experience, is inadvertently causing a dependency exception issue and impact.
