Windows Autopatch is improving the existing Tenant management experience within our portal. The Tenant management blade is used to alert IT admins of any actions that are required to maintain overall service health.
We are introducing the ability to alert you on:
  1. Expired licenses that must be renewed or replaced to maintain access to Windows Autopatch.
  2. Access related issues that would prohibit Windows Autopatch from managing your tenant.
We are also introducing the ability to mark the Windows Autopatch section of your tenant as “inactive” if there are any actions that need to be taken.
When will this happen:
This feature is available beginning May 2023.
How this will affect your organization:
To know if action is required, visit the Tenant management blade via:
  • Tenant administration > Windows Autopatch > Tenant management
  • Select the banner displayed within the Windows Autopatch Devices blade that alerts you to take action.
If you have no actions that need to be taken, there is no effect on your tenant. However, if the service has identified actions for you to take, you must act via the Tenant management blade. The following actions are critical and required to continue using the service:
Maintain tenant access: Licenses.
  • If this action is displayed for your tenant, one or more required licenses have expired or are missing. Renew these licenses as soon as possible. Until the licenses are renewed, your tenant will be in an inactive state. The list of applicable licenses are:
  • Microsoft Intune
  • Azure Active Directory Premium
  • Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 or higher
  • For more details about specific services plans, see Windows Autopatch Prerequisites.
Maintain tenant access: Auth.
  • If this action is displayed for your tenant, you need to provide consent for us to address tenant access issues. Failure to provide consent will inhibit us from providing the service and will put the Windows Autopatch section of your tenant in an “inactive” state.
The Windows Autopatch sections of your tenant will only be marked as “inactive” if one of the above actions are required. When the Windows Autopatch section of your tenant is “inactive”, Windows Autopatch will no longer manage the corresponding sections of your tenant or devices assigned to its management. It will also not perform the non-interactive actions used to run the service. Updates will continue to operate as configured at the time of the Windows Autopatch section of your tenant being marked “inactive” – this means that if the policies and configurations that Windows Autopatch set as part of the service were left intact, your devices will continue to receive the necessary updates. Finally, you’ll have read-only access to most of the Windows Autopatch portal, and only the following administration functions will be accessible:
  • Tenant administration > Windows Autopatch > Support requests
  • Tenant administration > Windows Autopatch > Tenant management
If you wish to continue using the service, you must resolve all actions as soon as possible. Once resolved, the Windows Autopatch section of your tenant will go back to an active state after a few hours. For detailed information, see Windows Autopatch tenant actions.
What you need to do to prepare
Once an action is shown, you must act immediately to avoid interruption with the Windows Autopatch service.
  • Review your licensing to ensure that you are not at risk of losing access to Windows Autopatch.
  • For all other actions, a Global Administrator will need to visit the Tenant management blade to provide consent for the specified changes.
