User impact: Users may be unable to see messages with attachments when searching in Exchange Online.

More info: While we’re unable to determine an estimate of how many users were affected by this problem, the issue likely affected less than 40 percent of users searching for email messages with attachments that were sent or received during two separate periods between Wednesday, May 31, 2023 3:30 PM UTC to Friday, June 16, 2023. Users whose mailboxes were hosted on mailbox database infrastructure where the problematic update was applied would have likely seen consistent impact for email during the period. Email messages outside of the impact period aren’t affected. This impacted all Exchange Online connection methods, including methods such as Outlook on the web and the Outlook desktop client.

Final status: While attempting to create a code change that optimizes and expedites the ongoing reindexing process, we determined that it isn’t feasible to reindex the entirety of the affected environment within an acceptable timeframe. We’ve already remediated impact for most affected users through manual reindexing, and we recommend contacting support if your organization is still experiencing this issue so we can manually reindex the affected email messages and completely remediate impact. No additional email messages sent or received outside of the impact period are affected.

Root cause: An update, intended to collect telemetry on email message sizes, was deployed which contained a regression. This caused crashes for a subset of email messages with attachments when users performed a search. The code was not covered by a configuration, so a hotfix was required, which was deployed and fixed this issue. However, fixing the messages that didn’t get indexed correctly encountered problems, detailed in the timeline below.
