User impact: Some users may encounter NDR failures when sending or receiving email messages in Exchange Online. More info: We expect the impact to be mitigated for a majority of our users; however, we remain focused on ensuring this incident is fully resolved. Users may receive a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) containing an error stating “554 5.6.0 Corrupt message content”. Additionally, users may intermittently receive calendar invite email messages as a plain text message containing winmail.dat attachments. Users may be able to send affected messages by attempting to resend. This may not be effective for all users. Current status: We’ve deployed the secondary fix via an emergency patch to a small portion of production infrastructure and have validated that email replay is successful as expected and that NDR errors have been eliminated in this environment. We’re now preparing to release this fix more broadly. Additionally, we’ve gathered additional trace logs from internal reproductions that we are analyzing to isolate a potential root cause. Scope of impact: Some users serviced by the impacted portion of infrastructure sending or receiving email in Exchange Online may be affected, although impact is limited to a small subset of messages.
