User impact: Some users may encounter NDR failures when sending or receiving email messages in Exchange Online.

More info: We expect the impact to be mitigated for a majority of our users; however, we remain focused on ensuring this incident is fully resolved.

Users may receive an NDR containing an error stating “554 5.6.0 Corrupt message content”.

Additionally, users may intermittently receive calendar invite email messages as a plain text message containing winmail.dat attachments.

Users may be able to send affected messages by attempting to resend. This may not be effective for all users.

Current status: Due to our solution saturating the majority of our internal infrastructure, we’re resending affected messages directed to internal and external recipients for a limited set of customers. We estimate this will take a couple hours to complete, and once we’ve validated its success we’ll proceed with resending affected messages for all other customers. If a recipient didn’t receive a message previously, they will receive it as a new email. In instances of previously sent email that was delivered to some but not all recipients, users that previously received the email will be sent a duplicate copy. Upon completion, we’ll validate if any email is routed through the small subset of infrastructure that has yet to receive the fix, and we’ll resubmit email destined for internal recipients within affected customer tenants to ensure they’re delivered as expected.

Scope of impact: Some users serviced by the impacted portion of infrastructure sending or receiving email in Exchange Online may be affected, although impact is limited to a small subset of messages.

Root cause: Preliminary root cause: A recent change to caching logic introduced a condition where messages with specific properties are cached, and subsequent messages containing those same cached properties are then rejected, resulting in NDR errors.
