If the allow list has no entries, all application can use EWS.<\/li>\n<li>If <b>EWSEnabled=False<\/b>, all EWS traffic is blocked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beginning in October 2026:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If <b>EWSEnabled=True<\/b> and no allow list is configured, all EWS traffic except Cross-tenant org relationships will be blocked.<\/li>\n<li>If <b>EWSEnabled=False<\/b>, all EWS traffic will be blocked.<\/li>\n<li><b>Tenants with EWSEnabled not configured (Null) remain subject to Microsoft&#8217;s phased retirement process<\/b> and will have EWS disabled as part of that rollout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most important change administrators should understand is that, beginning with retirement enforcement, setting  <b>EWSEnabled=True<\/b> without configuring <b>EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> will no longer permit unrestricted EWS access.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations that require EWS after October 2026 should ensure an <b>EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> allow list is configured and validated before enforcement begins.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations that have <b>EWSEnabled=True<\/b> and a configured <b>EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> allow list will not have their  <b>EWSEnabled<\/b> setting modified by Microsoft before April 2027.<\/p>\n<p><b>[Action required and recommendations]<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We strongly recommend that Exchange Online administrators begin preparation immediately.<\/p>\n<p>1. Create and validate an allow list<\/p>\n<p>Create an <b>EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> allow list containing applications that must continue using EWS.<\/p>\n<p>Important considerations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applications appearing in EWS usage reports that you intend to continue using should be included in the allow list.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft first-party applications that continue to rely on EWS must also be included if they appear in your usage reporting.<\/li>\n<li>Setting <b>EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> replaces the existing list. Ensure all required App IDs are included when updating the configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Verify the configured allow list:&nbsp;<span style=\"font-family: Menlo, Monaco, Consolas,\">Get-OrganizationConfig -RetrieveEwsOperationAccessPolicy | Format-List   EwsAllowedAppIDs<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The use of <b>RetrieveEwsOperationAccessPolicy<\/b> is required for performance reasons. The<b> EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> list is only retrieved when explicitly requested. Changes to  <b>EWSAllowedAppIDs<\/b> can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Allow sufficient time after updating the allow list before validating application access or troubleshooting connectivity issues.<\/p>\n<p>3.
